Bleeder (1999) – English Review

We follow a group of friends living in Denmark. Two of them run a video store, while the two others have a connection where one of them is together with a woman who is pregnant, and the other guy is her brother. But the man who’s about to be a father has anger issues, and that will create problems for himself and his friends.

Bleeder was the second movie Nicolas Winding Refn directed. He first directed Pusher (1996), and then he directed Bleeder. In the lead roles, we find Kim Bodnia and Mads Mikkelsen, and they always deliver the goods. Mads Mikkelsen plays an introvert who can’t communicate. When he tries to communicate with people, he only talks about movies.

Kim Bodnia plays an angry character, surprise, surprise! His girlfriend is pregnant, and it’s difficult to understand what’s wrong with the character Kim Bodnia plays. He is angry and frustrated, and it takes a while before you understand what he’s all about.

Mads Mikkelsen is the most charming character in the movie. The man is so strange, and it’s funny to follow him and watch him when he’s trying to get closer to the opposite sex. He’s interested in a woman who we never get close to, but you sense that she and Mads Mikkelsen is a perfect fit.

Bleeder is a small movie with few characters, and it builds up the tension slowly. In the beginning, I couldn’t quite understand what the movie was about as it burns slowly in the beginning. But after 40 minutes, the pieces in the puzzle fall into place, and the tension is through the roof when Kim Bodnia loses his temper. Those scenes are awesome!

Bleeder is two movies in one. It’s a story about romance and a strange character, and it’s a revenge movie with two men who try to find out who is the alpha. It just takes some time before the revenge story comes into play.

Rating: 8/10
