In the Realm of the Senses (1976) – English Review

Do not eat that egg!

“In the Realm of the Senses” is loosely based on a true story where a woman was having an affair with a married man. She is obsessed with him, and she can’t get enough of him and his manly parts. She wants him day and night, and she is jealous of his wife. She threatens to kill him if he has a good time with his wife.

This is a movie I have known about for over 20 years, and it is regarded as a cult classic. So the time had come. I had to see what the fuss is about.

There was so much controversy when this movie was released, but I am not going to spend time on that since I guess you can read it yourself. I am not here to hold your hand. But I can say that this is an adult movie that does not hold back when it comes to the erotic scenes. But they are not fun to watch. This is not Sex and Zen craziness.

My problem with the movie is that it has too many sex scenes and there is almost no story here. The first 50 minutes are quite boring, but then I picked up the theme of the movie about insane obsession and a man who I felt was depressed and, in the end, did not care if he died or not. They were inseparable in the name of sex, and the crazy woman wants the man all for herself, either alive or dead. He is hers, and we see the crazy woman losing her mind during the movie. She dives deep into the dark territory of madness. And she speaks a lot, and there are a lot of ugly geishas here. They cannot sing, and they cannot play the electric guitar.

What really bothered me was all of the talking during the erotic scenes. Man, the couple talk and talk, and there are some bizarre scenes here when the geishas do not leave the couple’s room while they are having a good time. They do not care if they have an audience, and the movie has a Twin Peaks moment with a dancing and creepy man. It is like Bob watching a couple having a good time while dancing.

“In the Realm of the Senses” is regarded as an art movie, but I do not agree with that since it focuses so much on the sex scenes and so little on the story and the visuals. The movie has a couple of really good-looking scenes, but other than that, I did not feel the arty-farty feeling here. The movie never gives us any sort of backstory and why the woman is behaving the way she does. I wanted to know more about her past since she is the most interesting character and the crazy one. What happened to her that drove her insane? The movie never gives a clear answer to that question. So I guess I have to watch one of the other movies they have made about this crazy woman. It is also interesting that she became a popular person after she had served her pretty short prison sentence. The world has always been crazy.
