Joji (2021) – English Review

The family’s black sheep create problems for the family when their father becomes ill. The black sheep is lazy and greedy, and his father has plenty of money.

Joji was a movie I enjoyed. This is an entertaining movie that could remind me of a Coen brothers movie. And we all love the Coen brothers, don’t we? If you don’t, just piss off! I don’t want you here!

What I appreciated is that the actors are all solid as a rock. Their acting feels so natural. There is no sign of overacting, and all of the actors are excellent.

At the beginning of the movie, we get a message that the movie is based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. So if you are familiar with Macbeth, then you know what to expect.

The entire story takes place on the plantation where the family lives. They have plenty of money, but no one likes the father. Now, this isn’t a movie that shows us what happened in the past, but you can see that the sons are afraid of their father. There’s a black sheep in the family, and I think he was the youngest son. He’s lazy, and he does nothing with his life. But he will mess up when he first gets the chance to get rid of his father.

What’s interesting to see is the family dynamics and how this family works when people in town talk about the family. They suspect that someone in the family has done something criminal that caused their father to die.

Joji isn’t a slow movie, as the story is engaging. This is a movie with talented actors who have to carry a lot of the movie on their shoulders with the use of body language. Had the actors not been as good as they are here, the experience wouldn’t have been the same. The story takes place in a small bubble on the family’s property, so the actors must do their best to keep the viewers engaged. And trust me, they do that perfectly!

As I said, the actors are excellent. The score is great and fitting, and the cinematography is beautiful. It smells so much of the Coen brothers in this movie. If you like the Coen brothers and the little universe they create in their movies, then this is a movie you should watch.
