Our Blues (2022) – English Review

We follow a group of people living on an island. They all have their own issues to handle in life, but in the end, they also have each other.

Our Blues is a TV series with 20 episodes, focusing on a selection of individuals living on the island.

We have a son who hates his dying mother. Then there are two dads who can’t stand each other, even though they were best friends growing up. Things don’t improve when their kids end up expecting a child, forcing their future plans to be put on hold. We also have an angry son, the same character who hates his mother, who is still in love with a woman who gave him the cold shoulder. He can’t get her out of his mind, and she returns to the island, depressed. Her kid is scared of her because of her mental state, and she’s just gone through a divorce.

Then there’s a wealthy woman, still in love with a man who shows up on the island looking for money to fund his daughter’s golf career in the U.S. But his daughter and wife want to return to South Korea. There’s also a grandmother who has to babysit her granddaughter because something happened to her son—she doesn’t know what yet, and the little girl has to keep quiet so her grandmother doesn’t have a heart attack. Lastly, we have a woman who falls for a man but carries a secret that scared off all her previous boyfriends. But this guy isn’t easy to shake—he’s determined, and in the end, she falls for him. But her past comes knocking at her door, and she has to woman up, come clean, and see where it all leads. Oh, and let’s not forget the woman who falls in love with a banker who has a best friend—but are they really best friends?

If you like drama, this is a top-notch series. The characters get about three episodes each, but they never really disappear—except for the banker, whose story kicks things off. He needs money to fulfill his dream of making his daughter a pro golfer. I urge you to stick with it, though, because his story is the most boring one of the bunch and doesn’t quite represent the rest of Our Blues. Everything just gets better, more emotional, and far more gripping. Honestly, I thought this series would be a slog after the mediocre opening episodes, but trust me, it only improves.

What about the acting? It’s solid—actually, that’s an understatement. It’s top-notch, and the chemistry between the actors is undeniable. If you have a beating heart, you’ll find yourself emotionally invested in most of the stories. The most intriguing one is about the son who hates his mother. It takes a while for their backstory to unfold, but when it does, you realize they’re equally awful in their own ways. At first, you feel sorry for the old woman dying without her son knowing it, and he seems pretty despicable. But when you hear his side, you start sympathizing with him and hating the mother. By the end, though, things change, and while the outcome isn’t surprising, it’s still emotionally draining.

The story of the young girl left with her grandmother is also heartbreaking. The actress playing the little girl is fantastic, and man, she gets hammered by emotions, which is tough to watch. The father was in a traffic accident, and the doctors believe he will die, so the wife is at the hospital while the daughter stays with the grandmother. The grandmother is pretty cruel towards the little girl, who cries a lot. I started to hate the cruel grandmother, who should be ashamed of herself! When the little girl believes her mother isn’t coming back to get her, you feel devastated for her. It’s heartbreaking to watch her cry and cry while the evil grandmother says cruel things to her.

There’s a reason Our Blues has been praised by both critics and audiences. It’s a well-acted series with relatable storylines. And, in the end, it’s genuinely heartwarming. You realize this isn’t a sinister show—these characters just need to take a deep dive, gasp for air, and move forward with their lives. And in the end, they’ve got each other.
