Psychokinesis (2018) – English Review

One of the most boring supeheroes ever!

A man drinks water that contains something special from outer space that turns him into a superhero with incredible powers. Now he’s trying to help his daughter he left when she was young. She and other business owners fight a property developer who wants them gone so that they can build a shopping mall and they use dirty tricks all the time. And they love to use violence, which isn’t a big surprise. After all, we are in South Korea!

After the success of Train to Busan, director Yeon Sang-ho became an overnight star. I found Train to Busan overrated, and the characters poorly written. I was interested to see if I would feel the same with Psychokinesis. Then I would at least get a confirmation that he’s terrible at creating characters that feel like real humans.

And I got the confirmation in Psychokinesis. I also got the confirmation that Yeon Sang-ho isn’t a very good director. He has possibly made the most boring superhero movie of all time! The entire script should have been thrown in the garbage together with the director!

In Psychokinesis there’s no hint of creativity. We have the usual South Korean formula of a greedy company that uses gangsters to beat up civilian shop owners. They want to clear the area so they can build a big shopping mall. The boss of the villains is an insane woman. And the police are in the pocket of the villains. Surprise!

The man who is transformed into a superhero has never been there for his daughter. The gangsters kill the mother of the daughter who runs a restaurant, and he tries to help her. It’s the usual story of reconciliation and the dramaturgy is so bad! How the story develops is something that normal people don’t buy! It’s not funny, it’s not provocative. It’s just embarrassing to watch!

There’s not much going on here. The characters are rubbish, they are generic, hollow, cardboard cutouts. The actor who plays the girl’s father is so terrible. The man looks like he’s on drugs, he has no hint of charisma! Ryu Seung-ryong is his name, and I’ve seen him in many movies. I’ve never liked him, he has no charisma, and he just looks so boring. I hate him!

If you think this is a movie that will give you a lot of action, then you are wrong! It’s only when there are about 15 minutes left that the so-called superhero takes up the fight against the villains.

Before that, nothing interesting happens. The plot moves at a snail’s pace. There’s nothing that impresses in Psychokinesis. The villains together with the police beat up the civilians, and the whole movie makes no sense! The topic is corruption, but come on. I want to see a fun movie and not yet another movie about corruption in South Korea! Try to create something new, for God’s sake!

What a garbage movie! Yes, we know that South Korea is a country that’s plagued with corruption! I’ve seen it in over 150 films or more! The movie pushes the topic down your throat so you can’t breathe. Psychokinesis has no shame at all!

This is one of the worst movies I’ve seen from South Korea. The movie is disgustingly bad!
