The Empty Man (2020) – English Review

A former cop investigates the disappearance of a young woman who’s the daughter of a friend of his. This leads him to the scary man that goes under the name, The Empty Man. Does he exist?

I wasn’t a fan of this long and pretty boring movie. The runtime is just too long at around 136 minutes. There’s not enough going on here to defend such a long runtime.

The protagonist is a sad man who lost his wife and son in an accident while he was having fun. A girl he knows comes to visit him one day, and she acts a little weird. Shortly after, she disappears without a trace. Her mother, whom the protagonist knows, asks him to find her. And that leads him to a cult. So now he tries to find out the truth about the mysterious The Empty Man.

The Empty Man is a dark and gray movie with boring characters. The universe feels small, and there’s not one interesting character here. I’ve experienced this type of story before, and what’s important is to have some interesting characters. But the characters in this movie are so dull!

The protagonist has his inner demons, but it feels so lazy when the movie reveals his tragic past. I didn’t feel sorry for him at all, and you feel from the start that this is a cold and serious universe that won’t increase your pulse. This universe feels dead.

The characters are mostly self-absorbed and gray. They are not characters that invite you in. They are so serious and gloomy. So I couldn’t care about them. There’s not much in them that you can connect with. They all feel like The Empty Man. Did you get it? They are almost empty, all of them!

The movie tries to build up some tension in several scenes, and when it tries to be intense and scary, it fails. There’s absolutely nothing new to see here, so The Empty Man was a disappointment. It’s a long and lifeless movie with uninteresting characters.

Rating: 4/10
