The Medium (2021) – English Review

We follow a woman who has been possessed by a good-natured spirit that only possesses women in her family. But something happened in the past, and she believes that the spirit she has in her wants to transfer itself to her niece’s body.

Her niece is acting strange, so it seems like things will work out if the spirit is transferred to her. But then she finds out that there’s something wrong, and that her niece is in grave danger. But it’s not just her niece! So they need to exorcise the evil spirit that has taken over the nice’s body, but that’s not an easy task. A documentary crew from South Korea follows the family, and they are going to wish that they stayed in South Korea!

The Medium is a South Korean-Thai horror movie that has nothing new to offer if you have seen most exorcism movies. But it has one thing going for it, which is that it’s one of the best modern exorcism movies that has been made.

The Medium is directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun. He was one of two directors who directed Shutter (2004) and Alone (2007). It’s also written by Na Hong-jin, the director of The Chaser (2008), The Yellow Sea (2010), and The Wailing (2016).

The Medium isn’t in a hurry when it builds up the story and the characters. It takes slow steps building up the possession of the young woman. It takes its time to build up the atmosphere. I can guarantee you that the big payoff is excellent! The movie takes small steps from 1 to 10, and it turns up the heat in the last 20 minutes to a crazy 10.

So I guess you understand the story has nothing new to offer. But the movie builds up to the climax perfectly. But I didn’t like that too many people lose their minds at the end. It suddenly felt like I was watching a zombie movie. There were also a few scenes I didn’t like with the documentary crew.

I liked it more when the focus was just on the possessed woman. The scenes with the night vision cameras at her home when we see what she does at night are creepy. And for dog lovers, you will see a pretty brutal and sick scene. What makes these scenes work is the actress who is excellent in this role. Especially, in the creepy night scenes. And she is pretty hot too, so that helps!
