The World of Us (2016) – English Review

Best friends?

We follow a young girl who is bullied at school. She doesn’t have any friends, and some girls in her class harass her when they get the chance. Then it’s time for summer vacation, and she meets a girl she becomes friends with. It turns out that the girl is going to be her new classmate when the summer vacation is over. But when the summer vacation is over, the girl she thought was her best friend gives her the cold shoulder and ignores her. So what’s going on?

The World of Us is a solid movie with excellent young actors who impressed me. I have always said that the best young actors in the world come from Japan, South Korea, and China. Many of them are so natural and convincing. It never feels like they are acting at all. And that takes talent.

Besides the excellent acting, the story in The World of Us is well told. Most of us can relate to what we are seeing with a student who doesn’t fit in. You have the student who isn’t good at sports, or who comes from a poor family. Not many young kids want to be friends with a kid like that. The protagonist is the only one who doesn’t have a smartphone.

So when the protagonist finds a friend, you feel happy for her. But you sense that there’s something wrong with her new friend. She seems unstable because of her family situation, and she doesn’t have a winning personality. And it turns out that this character is also carrying some heavy baggage from the past that she can’t get rid of.

The protagonist is happy during her summer vacation, but when she returns to school something has changed, and the movie takes it from there. It’s interesting to see how it will work out when best friends become enemies. It’s crazy how good these young actors are. There are some intense scenes in the movie that make an impression. I was so impressed by how the protagonist handled the traumatizing situations she didn’t deserve. What a strong girl!

She isn’t perfect when she talks too much which triggers some of the characters she’s talking to. But she’s young, and she isn’t a bad person at all. She’s almost perfect, so you want justice when someone is mean to her. But she can almost take care of herself, and you pray to God that she will be the one standing tall when she becomes an adult.

The World of Us is a great movie about fitting in and how much you are willing to sacrifice to fit in and hang with the cool gang. And the acting is excellent.
